Tenuta Cavalier Pepe

tenuta cavalier pepe roseIn the heart of Campania’s DOCG area, Milena Pepe and her crew make wines with personality and character.  In addition to Fiano di Avellino DOCG and Greco di Tufo DOCG, they also make the lesser known Coda di Volpe DOC.  You will find a red wine to suit your taste and pair with all menus: from the lighter San Severino Irpinia Rosso to the full bodied Taurasi DOCG.  But for me, it’s the Aglianico rosé, a coral-pink color, well structured and flavorful rosé, perfect for an aperitivo.

The cellar and vineyards are open for touring Monday – Friday from 9 – 5, Saturday and Sunday from 10 – 1 and 3 – 5.  Please reserve ahead via e-mail or phone.  There is an agriturismo and restaurant.  You may also schedule to be there during the vendemmia. Irpinia harvests much later than other parts of Italy.  The cool air at an elevation  between 450 and 700 meters give these grapes their uniqueness.   They ripen slowly and the exposure allows sun most days of the year.  To participate is highly recommended and so much fun to experience just a part of the process to make wine gives you a wonderful appreciation for the efforts that go into every bottle.
